Autonomous and Interactive Practices in Language Learning (Workshops)

About the event

Learner Development Collaborative Zone: Call for Contributions
The Learner Development workshops are collaborative spaces where people come together to share their experiences of language learning and teaching. Participants will have exciting opportunities to discuss their perspectives on learner autonomy in small groups. Workshops include student discussions, teacher discussions, and a collaborative workshop with one of the keynote speakers.
At the end of the first two workshops, groups will make short video reflections about aspects of their group discussions they found stimulating. These reflections will be shared across groups and workshops to provide multiple perspectives on learner development and autonomy. The final workshop will be lead by the keynote speaker.
We hope this interconnected approach of sharing reflections will lead to deeper understanding and innovative forms of collaboration throughout the day.

This page describes the collaborative sessions for students and practitioners to discuss and reflect on their experiences of learning. For those wishing to submit a proposal in the traditional presentation-based sessions, go to this link.

Morning Session (120 minutes)
Student Workshop: Discussions and Reflections about Learner Autonomy

In the morning workshops, Japanese and overseas students will take part in facilitated discussions in small groups and share personal learning stories to do with autonomy in their own lives. The students will then work together to make slides and/or video reflections to bring together perspectives and questions from sharing and discussing their stories.

To participate, students will submit a short personal story and 2 to 3 related questions for the group to discuss on Flipgrid in English (1-2 minutes). Click here to see an example of a student's video.

Contribute to Session - Deadline 20/11/2022

Early Afternoon Session (90 minutes)
Teacher Workshop: Discussions and Reflections about Learner Autonomy

In this workshop, teachers will take part in small-group discussions. These discussions will start with short videos that the teachers make before the conference, in which they share personal stories to do with autonomy in their own lives and present some questions for discussion. After discussions, workshop participants will work together to make slides and/or video reflections to bring together key insights and questions that they have about learner autonomy.

Contribute to Session - Deadline 20/11/2022

Please submit a short personal story and 1-3 related questions for the group to discuss on Flipgrid in English (2-3 minutes). Click here to see examples and to add your own video.

Afternoon Session (90 minutes)
Interactive Keynote with Anja Burkert:
Autonomous Language Learning Experiences in the University Classroom

In this interactive presentation, Anja will share personal experiences introducing aspects of a pedagogy for autonomy (e.g., learner diaries, peer-reviewing) in the university classroom. The keynote will include small-group work to explore issues related to autonomous and interactive practices in language learning.
