This talk will introduce the ‘reflective dialogue’ approach by focusing on why reflection through dialogue is essential in fostering autonomy in language learning. In addition, it will emphasize how reflective dialogue can be applied to professional development by sharing some case studies. Although the keynote presentation will be delivered in English, the slides will be bilingual (Japanese-English).
Bio
Satoko Kato is an Associate Professor at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS). She holds a Ph.D. degree in Education and a Master’s degree in TESOL. She has conducted over 4,000 sessions to promote learner autonomy through one-on-one reflective dialogue. She also focuses on developing and implementing online education programs for advisors and teachers domestically and internationally.
In this interactive presentation, I will share my personal experiences with introducing aspects of a pedagogy for autonomy (e.g. learner diaries, peer-reviewing) in my university classroom.
Bio
Anja Burkert is a teacher of English and French at the University of Graz, Austria. She holds a Ph.D. in language teaching methodology and is especially interested in the promotion of learner autonomy among her students and the use of English for academic purposes. Anja obtained a teaching award from her university in 2010. From 2008 till 2021, she was a committee member of the Learner Autonomy (LA) SIG of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL), serving as Pre-Conference Event, LASIG showcase, and local events organiser.
